Tributes have been paid to a man with a ‘positive outlook on life’ who died after crashing his electric scooter on Blackpool Promenade.

Andrew James Hughes, 39, was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital after the incident at around 12.40pm on Sunday June 25 near to the Grade Hotel. Tests found he had suffered a traumatic head injury and bleeding to the brain in the crash.

Despite best efforts from medical staff, Andrew was pronounced dead at 9.30pm the same day.

An inquest into Andrew’s death at Blackpool Town Hall on Friday (August 4) heard that had seen his step-father just half an hour before the crash occurred.

Lancs Live reported that Andrew, who lived in Poulton-le-Fylde, had just finished a seven-hour shift working as a cleaner at Genting Casino on Queen's Promenade. Assistant Coroner Louise Rae said it was not yet clear how the incident had taken place.

The coroner told the inquest: "On Sunday June 25 at approximately 12.40pm Andrew had been involved in a single vehicle road traffic collision while riding an e-scooter and had fallen off for an unknown reason."

A final inquest will take place on November 2 to understand more of how the incident happened. The coroner added: "I am satisfied that the threshold for me to open an inquest has been met and clearly an inquest is required."

Andrew's family said in a tribute after his death: “Andrew was a much-loved son, brother, uncle and friend. He could always be counted on for a hug if needed and his positive outlook on life was inspiring. He loved Man City, his job at Genting Casino and buying the latest gadgets.

“His loss has left a huge gap in his family and friends’ lives, we can only try to heal and remember him with love.”
